| So much to do, so little time! It’s officially summer today, Sun. June 21 and Vancouver’s event schedule is bursting at the seams. Jazz Fest, Car Free Day, Make Music Vancouver, Celebration of Light — just some of the events we get to enjoy for being here! As a followup to the Canadian Art Foundation’s Gallery Hop Vancouver on April 11, the 4th annual ArtWalk South Granville was held yesterday.
Nothing magnifies one’s appreciation for art more than context. An ArtWalk with artist talks is about as good as it gets.
Most of the galleries on Granville are clustered together between West 6th and Broadway including the incredible Fragrant Wood Gallery.
While attending an ArtWalk is definitely a kind of one-stop opportunity to expose yourself to all the galleries in a conveniently organized and informative package, one can always take it upon themselves to visit the locations on their own and speak with the attendants on site about the works.
Don’t forget to put this event on your radar for next year!
Below are some of my favorites currently on display at Fragrant Wood. They are by renowned carvers mostly, perhaps entirely, from Indonesia. They have chosen teakwood or sandalwood as their material.
I was first introduced to wood carvings with this kind of intricacy when I visited Shanghai and have been interested in this style ever since. The exquisite detail reminds me of Keita Sagaki’s drawings.The dexterity required to complete any one of these pieces is remarkable. Words and images are sufficient to a point. Trust me. These need to be seen up close and in person.
